LOW-CARBON AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

SS304L Stainless Steel

SS304L is the low-carbon version of SS304, combining general corrosion resistance, formability and weldability with reduced susceptibility to chromium carbide precipitation during welding.

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

SS304L Grade Information

SS304L, commonly designated AISI 304L, is a low-carbon austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. Its chemistry is closely related to SS304, but the lower carbon limit reduces the tendency for chromium carbide precipitation during welding.

For Spiral Wound Gaskets, SS304L may be selected as metallic winding material and for compatible ring components where its corrosion resistance, temperature capability and process compatibility meet the required service conditions.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION

SS304L Physical & Service Information

Reference physical properties and service considerations relevant to SS304L material selection.

Density Approximately 8.0 g/cm³
Elastic Modulus Approximately 193 GPa
Thermal Conductivity Approximately 16 W/m·K near 100°C
Mean Thermal Expansion Approximately 17.2 µm/m·K from 20–100°C
Melting Range Approximately 1400–1450°C
Structure Austenitic
Carbon Level Maximum 0.030%, lower than standard SS304
Weldability Good weldability; the low carbon content reduces susceptibility to chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone
Magnetic Behaviour Generally non-magnetic in the annealed condition; cold working may introduce some magnetic response
Corrosion Behaviour Good general corrosion resistance. Chloride-rich environments may cause pitting or crevice corrosion and can require a more resistant alloy
Heat Treatment Normally supplied solution annealed. Treatment requirements depend on product form and governing specification
Spiral Wound Gasket Selection Use where SS304L is compatible with the process medium, operating temperature, pressure and selected filler material
