Composition & Mechanical Properties
| Grade / UNS | C % | Mn % | P % | S % | Si % | Ni % | Cr % | Mo % | Cu % | Nb + Ta % | Fe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy 20 N08020 | ≤0.070 | ≤2.0 | ≤0.045 | ≤0.035 | ≤1.0 | 32.0–38.0 | 19.0–21.0 | 2.0–3.0 | 3.0–4.0 | 8 × C to 1.0 | Remainder |
Composition values are mass percentages. ≤ indicates a maximum; ≥ indicates a minimum.
| Grade / UNS | Product form / condition | Tensile min (MPa) | Yield min (MPa) | Elongation min (%) | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alloy 20 N08020 | Plate / sheet / strip · Specified annealed condition | 551 | 241 | 30 | ≤217 HBW or ≤95 HRB |
| Alloy 20 N08020 | Thickness <0.015 in. (0.38 mm) · 1 in. gauge length | 551 | 241 | 20 | ≤217 HBW or ≤95 HRB |
- For thickness below 0.015 in. (0.38 mm), elongation is 20% minimum in a 1 in. (25.4 mm) gauge length.
- Either Brinell or Rockwell B hardness testing is permissible.
- Niobium plus tantalum has a lower limit of eight times the carbon content and an upper limit of 1.0%.
- B463 was withdrawn in 2026; this page retains the supplied B463-99 historical data.
From material form
to gasket component.
Review the listed material grade and its delivery condition when selecting winding strip or ring stock for a specified gasket design.
Material standards and gasket standards serve different purposes.
ASTM B463 addresses the material forms identified on this page. Finished metallic gasket requirements are addressed separately by the applicable gasket standard.

Which website material grades are included?
Alloy 20.
What edition is used for these tables?
The tables use ASTM B463-99.
Are material properties independent of condition?
No. The mechanical table identifies the applicable product form, condition and dimensional range for each listed row.
