One standard. Multiple stainless grades.
ASTM A240/A240M covers stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessels and general applications. Chemical composition and mechanical-property requirements vary by UNS grade. General requirements are governed by ASTM A480/A480M.
This page summarizes 14 selected UNS designations , not every grade covered by the standard. Grade 309 and 310 are shown as the explicitly listed 309S and 310S designations. Duplex 2205 is separated into S31803 and S32205 because their limits differ.

Mechanical data: Yield values are from the standard's specified yield-strength column; elongation is for the stated 2 in. / 50 mm gauge length. Hardness is shown in the applicable scale. Requirements, notes and exceptions in the full standard still apply. For UNS S31254 (254 SMO), separate sheet/strip and plate tensile requirements are shown.
Engineered for demanding service.
Grade selection depends on the process environment, temperature, corrosion exposure and equipment design.
From material specification to gasket construction
Appropriate stainless steel grades may be selected for metallic winding strip and gasket inner or outer rings. The required material product form and gasket construction must also meet the applicable purchase and gasket standards.

Short answers for engineers and purchasing teams.
Does ASTM A240 cover SS 316L?
Yes. Type 316L, UNS S31603, is included in ASTM A240/A240M.
Is Duplex 2205 one single UNS grade?
No. S31803 and S32205 are separately listed UNS grades with different chemical and mechanical requirements.
Does ASTM A240 specify finished spiral wound gaskets?
No. ASTM A240 specifies stainless steel plate, sheet and strip material; finished gasket requirements must be established separately.
Are these all grades in ASTM A240?
No. This page displays 14 selected grades relevant to this website. ASTM A240 also covers many additional UNS designations.
